Chapter 5
Tina tried to help Jericho carry in at least the plates, but he grabbed them out of her hands before she could get a grip on you. âBring in the wine. Iâve got this.â
She did as instructed and sat down. Her wine glass was almost empty, so she filled it halfway. The edges of her consciousness had started to softly blur, which meant she should get some food inside her as quickly as possible. She couldnât remember the last time sheâd felt comfortable enough with someone to have more than one glass of wine. In the last year, sheâd kept to one glass when she was out with coworkers, which had been about her only social life.
She sat down and dug in. She knew Jericho was watching her but she didnât care. The feel of the pasta and chicken melding together on her tongue, with the punch of flavor from the sauce, had her closing her eyes. The man knew how to cook. How had she missed that? Admittedly, the few memories she had of eating the weekend theyâd been together was of delivery.
She had finished half her plate and was considering going back for seconds when he asked the question sheâd been hoping to avoid. âWhat if you never have kids? Is that going to affect your relationship with your family?â
Twirling her fork on her plate to gather up some pasta, she let the question hang in the air. Not to make him uncomfortable, but so she could sort out her answer. The immediate one was that it wouldnât affect her relationships, but she couldnât be sure.
âIâd like to think it wouldnât, but my mom and all of her sisters have kids. All of my great-aunts had kids. I come from a family that likes to reproduce. Even the boys got asked when they were going to have kids. If itâs not you getting asked, itâs one of your siblings or cousins.â
âHave you ever told your family you arenât sure you want kids?â
âNo. I always had my career to deflect them with. They loved the fact that I was a lawyer and I was good at it.â
âHave you ever thought about not having kids?â
Again, she focused on her food before responding. The tangle of feelings in her gut that sheâd mostly hidden away wriggled to life again with the light being shined on them. âA few times. But Iâve never wanted to commit to that. I figured that alone was a response. Why? Do you not want kids?â
He lifted his shoulder and sipped on the water heâd brought in with him. âI never gave it that much thought. It helps that Iâm a guy and weâre given a pass to have kids pretty much whenever we feel like it.â
âI know guys with biological clocks. One of my brothers being a prime example. He was even more eager than Laurie to get married and start reproducing. Hence why I have an eleven-year-old niece.â And Carla was one of the big reasons why Tina was happy to be home.
